Changed the water pump unit in my 58 Johnson fat fifty. ATTEMPTED TO anyway. How in the devil do you know the upper copper tube is lined up with the grommet in the housing? I got everything put together and was putti g the lower unit back on. I COULD NOT get it to push up the last 1/2″. I did get a couple bolts started and it did pull up without resistance so I assumed I got it. Put it on the Barrell and it’s NOT pumping water. Yes I put the 1/2 moon key in and when you turn the shaft by hand you can hear the impeller turning. I’m thinking the upper copper tube that slips in the grommet wasn’t lined up? Any tricks of the trade on this. Doing it by myself so it’s extremely hard holding everything and looking and such. Gotta be an easier way? Should the motor be tilted up or down? Help please

I feel for yah’ … I had the same frustrating issue with my 1961 75 HP Evenrude.   Mine has two tubes that go into the pump housing. does yours also?  The best plan is to have the tubes already installed up inside the tower, that way there is a better chance of seeing the fit-up to the pump. Also be sure that the tube ends going into the pump are burr free so as not to snag on the gromet, a little grease helps too. And the last 1/2 ‘ inch is usually a harder push as the tubes go home in the rubber grommet or O rings. Have a couple of longer bolts handy to rest the unit on as you move it up into place. And a BIG help is another set of hands.

All good advice and thanks , I believe I’ve got it. O e of the tubes was oblonged a little. I straitened it up then measured the distances from the shaft to the holes in the housing for the tubes (if the tubes get rotated any it will change the location) then a really good flashlight a long screwdriver and aching forearms lol. Thanks for the tips

I had a similar problem with my 1970 40 HP  Big Twin and bought a snake light torch……made the job a lot easier.
