just an observation this p.m.
I just did the points on my 9622a 9.5 Sportwin imho… I found the small "brass colored" retainer clips that hold onto the spring blade of the moving half of the points…. was somewhat weak and tended to slide off easily 😮 so I installed some older clips which I kept from previous ignition refurbs .
the small indent inside the clips which is suppose to anchor into the hole in the thicker retainer bar was very thin as if not punched enough
during manufacturing.my older clips appeared to have a better hold on things .

December 13, 2016 at 6:34 pm #49125They are continuity clips to help make the electrical circuit and should fit snugly. I’ve noticed the aftermarket ones can fit loose so I just pinch them down a bit with a pair of side cutters to make them work properly.
December 13, 2016 at 7:24 pm #49126Interesting….. I did not know they were actually used as an element to provide electrical connectivity
thanks for info
I completed all the electrical stuff on my $75 purchase. points, coils condensers, metallic plug wires, boots etc… works like a charm spark wise
next is the gearcase sealing …maybe afer Christmas
the shift rod O ring under the bushing looks challenging..to me anyway UTUBe shows a trick using a long bolt and wood plate to "screw out " the "tapped" bushing is this a good method or is anything easier ?

December 13, 2016 at 8:36 pm #49130I’ve seen some that are weak also. Like no spring tension to them. Save your old stuff, guys.
December 13, 2016 at 8:55 pm #49133I’ve had so much trouble with Sierra points, that I stopped using them. The pivot point is very sloppy, and it’s hard to keep the points in adjustment, at least on the ones I’ve tried to use.. Their condensers seem to be fine, as I’ve had no problems with using those.
December 13, 2016 at 11:50 pm #49140based on my son’s experience with stuff made in China…. "Thinner is better" profit wise…..

December 14, 2016 at 1:49 am #49152I don’t use much Sierra stuff if I can get OEM. I don’t use their points at all for the reasons mentioned here. I have used their coils but I don’t like the fithe of the laminations. I have used their condensers without issue. Their Impellers seem to work fine, but do not seem to last as long as the OEM ones. They seem to take a set much quicker. I’ll pay a little more and use the OEM on my motors if it’s available.

December 14, 2016 at 4:35 am #49157I did have to convince the coils into place more than usual but they go in….
the flywheel was hit the laminationscondensers measured ok … on my new Canadian tire meter
points…. well it will be a wait and see … for now…. I lined them up with the ohmmeter method

December 14, 2016 at 10:47 am #49161Those clips have been like that as long as I can remember, what, twenty, thirty years or more, now? I tried Sierra bearings a few times, when rebuilding Mercruiser stern drives. They didn’t even FIT, so who knows if they would have lasted? I don’t think anyone at Sierra is a bit concerned about anything except a buck. They are pathetic.
Long live American manufacturing!
December 14, 2016 at 5:49 pm #49180I seldom replace points for this very reason. Most can be cleaned up. I have a bin of old points for the ones that are truly worn out. Good luck. It sounds like you are doing all the right things.
