I’m finally getting to my 1957 Elgin 12 hp. As one would expect the coils need replacement. I basically understand how to install OMC type coils, but have a couple of questions not covered in the write-ups seen:

The laminations are riveted to the stator plate. Is there a procedure for removing and replacing them?

The coils were, to put it mildly, firmly attached to the lams. It did not seem wise to force too much and take a chance on distorting things and messing up the gap to the magnets. So I ended up slitting the coils with a hacksaw and prying them off in pieces. This worked OK, but is this how one is supposed to have to do it? Am I missing something obvious?

How reliable are the old Wick condensers? (I know to hold the stem when tightening or loosening the screw.) Should I replace them with something?

      Thanks for any guidance.

Let’s just say I have removed lots of them with a hacksaw. One of us must be doing something right.

Do not remove the laminations from the plate if you can possibly avoid it. They are riveted on an then turned to size in a lathe for proper clearance.

Wick?? You mean paper, as in waxed paper between two sheets of foil? They are notoriously leaky (electrical leakage). But they usually work anyway.

Hmmm, I guess they didn’t want to make things easy?

No, it means that I kant spel. Meant Wico, saw the error, but apparently this board doesn’t allow editing of posts.
