So this one is near the head waters of the Chesapeake Bay. 1963. I could be there in two hours. I would offer $50.00, conditional on a first hand look. It MAY be salt water dead.(?)
What goes wrong with salt water. I had a neighbor who fished the Bay, and would always run his outboard in a barrel of fresh water after returning home.Might this motor be worth a look, or should I forget it? Thank you.
November 12, 2016 at 8:50 pm #47345The seller doesn’t know anything about the motor,or is claiming ignorance .Not a good sign . Really can’t know until you drive out and take a look at it. Shifter seized could be expensive , it may be the gear case is junk, definetly check the lower unit gear oil

Robbie RobertsonNovember 12, 2016 at 9:24 pm #47349$120 seems pricy to me especially a potential salty . IF Compression is decent $50 ain’t so bad
I have paid $25 CDN for a good 15hp FD and $50 for a nice 9.5hp mdl 9623 most JW’s (3) $50 and below CD & AD below 60$
parts have always exceeded purchase prices but all came out to be good engines for less than $150
all engines have cost less than a visit to the local Casino 😯 or my wife year’s supply of cat food to feed the strays
that visit us every day 😆 .Joining AOMCI has priviledges 🙂

Shifter stuck, couldn’t pull the recoil. It’s from fresh water but lower unit looked crusty like it had sat in the water for a long time. I had a feeling it was stuck in the gear case, but the seller was a friend of my sister’s and assured me it did run good at one time. I really only wanted it for the powerhead so I took a chance. This is why it was stuck.

He was right about it running good though. I mounted the powerhead on my ’57 that needed one.

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?November 13, 2016 at 1:38 pm #47385Well, the good news is that this later version of the 10hp powerhead has the larger wrist pins with needle bearings, so chances are good that the powerhead is serviceable. Needless to say, you would want to check the compression, although all the oil in the cylinders may give false high readings…The other good news is that it looks as though the gearcase has been replaced at some time though. Like others have said, you would definitely want to drain the gear lube, count on rebuilding/replacing the gearcase if you find it to be full of water. Good driveshafts for these engines are tough to find and the frozen shift lever is not a good sign.
The bad news is that this looks to be a salt water motor, so even the simplest of repairs might involve torch assistance.
All that being said, this would be the perfect size engine for you 12′ tinny though. So, I am in agreement with everyone, offer considerably less unless you confirm that gearlube is free of water and compression is good. And, be prepared for this to be a "parts motor".
I’m thinking you will find a better candidate for purchase at an AOMCI meet this winter. But, there is surely nothing to lose by having a look at this one if you don’t mind the drive.November 13, 2016 at 4:14 pm #47388I sent a note saying $50,.00 tops, after a look/see. Reply: Not for sale at that price. (I deleted all the links)
November 13, 2016 at 7:32 pm #47399I think you made the right decision….
