Surprise! The key is Metric. That’s why the common 3-16" Woodruff keys from the hardware store won’t fit.

That is a surprise. I bought a pack of flywheel key from an auto store in the mid 90s and they wouldn’t fit. I put one of them in the vise that was close to fitting and filed it with a hand file until it fit like it should.

Is there any good reason to use the OMC-sourced keys with the marks on them?

Briggs has long used non-ferrous keys, but there it’s fairly easy to shear them by hitting something with the blade. I’ve seen cases where a steel key held but the flywheel hub split at the keyway.

The marks on the OMC keys are to hold them snuggly in the keyway to keep them properly aligned with the centerline of the crankshaft. You can always upset the metal on your aftermarket key with a cold chisel if desired.

The 8 horse Briggs on our tiller loves to shear the aluminum key by the end of the season. It has a heavy cast iron flywheel which would probably bend the crank or split if the key didn’t shear. At least our outboards have rubber hubs in the props and shear pins to avoid this from happening.

Well that was a cinch! Never removed one with this tool before, but it sure made it easy! Thanks Richard!

So to reinstall a new seal, i just tap it in with a piece of pipe or something that has the appropriate diameter? How will i know when it’s properly seated?

You can use a deep well socket, if memory serves, of the proper size, of course

Well………….that is a tool on my list for Richard to make! 🙂

Short of that, a piece of ABS or PVC pipe works well. I prefer not to use a steel tool, unless its stepped, you can damage the seal.

Ok, got a new seal and a crank key. Haven’t found the right diameter pipe to set the seal in yet but that will be next. (I agree that Richard should make the tool and sell them with the seal puller as a set–would make the best father’s day gift ever!)

I seem to recall Frank telling us once where these 2 parts should be lubricated and where they shouldn’t be lubricated. Frank, are you out there? Also, is white lithium grease the stiff to use here?

                        Thanks!
