I just picked up three vintage outboards, 2 Johnson Sea Horse 18 electric start and 1 Merc 60. So, now the next step… …researching what models I have, ways to assess their general condition, and their value.
Any help out there?
And how the heck do I attach photos here?

July 30, 2015 at 1:45 am #21219Yeah, there’s a trick to adding photos. And I don’t know it, yet 🙂
I upload mine to Photobucket then include a link to the photos in my posts.July 30, 2015 at 1:56 am #21220niedermee
First on the pictures, You have to have them on a host website like Photo Bucket.
On Photo bucket, right click on the picture You want, It will bring up the picture
by itself.
On the right side of picture there is a list of code’s, Left click on the "img" code, this copies
it.
Now on the forum reply, Left click where You want the picture in Your post, then right click
and left click on "paste".
At least that’s how I do it.A good place to start for info on the motors is Oddjob motors website;
http://www.oddjobmotors.com/index.htmAbout the value, we don’t discuss that here because there are just too many
variables, such as condition, location,and how desirable the motor is.
Here’s what it say’s on the home page;

July 30, 2015 at 4:48 am #21233Here’s some photos of two of them. There’s another Johnson 18 HP Sea Horse just like the one in the photos, but it has both long shaft and a short shaft, I believe. there’s an electronic starter hanging next to the Johnson that I’ve got to figure out too.

July 30, 2015 at 7:09 am #21235The Johnson is a 1958, a fairly popular model around here because of the good looks in the styling department. If the starter actually is on the motor (can’t see it in the pictures), that’s a plus also. The included wiring harness is a big plus because they are always missing or mutilated and hard to find.
Merc looks very familiar, but I don’t know enough to I.D. it. I do notice that it is not the automatic transmission one.
July 30, 2015 at 11:13 am #21240The merc is a 61-63 Merc 60 (6 hp). They are traditional style gear shift and not auto transmission as Frank already mentioned.
They are great little motors and run very smooth. Lightweight and will generally be a very healthy 6hp. Hope you got a fuel tank side fuel fitting for it. They are smaller than the typical mercury fitting and generally more expensive because they have been NLA for some time making them harder and harder to come by. I do see them pop up on eBay.
July 30, 2015 at 2:49 pm #21251Jason, what does this piece look like?
July 30, 2015 at 4:13 pm #21253Like Frank says, that 58 18hp electric start is a unique find if the starter and wiring is in good condition. Looks like the powerhead was rebuilt/replaced though.
Nonetheless, I hope you didn’t purchase these engines thinking you can sell them for a major profit, collecting old outboards is not a profitable venture.July 30, 2015 at 5:35 pm #21258Obviously not a major profit, but I really dig old vintage stuff and thought these were super cool so I picked them up thinking someone might need some spare parts for projects they’re restoring. Plus, my hope is that my son can help me dig into these and get one running. As I understand it, the complete Johnson runs, so now I’d like to learn how to test that. Any help would be appreciated, as I’m starting at zero.
I took additional photos of the starter motor and wiring harness for the Johnson, and also the fuel connection for the Mercury. I also took photos of the third motor, which I was told is a parts motor for the other. Can anyone tell me what the other parts in the are (shaft, gears and bottom housing)? I was told they had something to do with a long or short shaft for the Johnsons.
Would it be helpful for this forum to help me answer my questions if I took other shots (e.g., different angles, showing other parts that are under this cover or that one)?
