Check out minnespolis Craigslist/boat parts. There is a very interesting barn find Evenrude listed. What was it used for?

I’ve seen these before and am trying to remember. About 6ft tall with a circular steering handle. Was this some kind of military use motor?

Its a navy version of an Evinrude lightfour 9.7hp model 4375 which should make it a 1943 model. The shaft is 15" longer than the standard shaft and can be spun 360 degrees without stopping allowing it to reverse.

There were more variations in the Lightfour than in any other model Evinrude built. Today we may see 4 – long or short shaft, with or without electric starting. When the Lightfour was in production, there were 8 choices every year. These included 3 shaft lengths. Standard or full reversing, Standard or heavy duty 3 to 1 gear case, and rope or auto-rewind starting. The only thing not offered was electric starting – probably because no one asked for it. . . 😆

What is the difference between the light 4 and the zephyr. The design looks similar.

The 9.7 horse power Light four is approximately 15 cubic inches and weighs 66 pounds – The 5.4 horse power Zephyr is approximately 10 cubic inches and weighs 49 pounds. . . 😉
