what is this hole for? RDE-17 1955 25 hp

This hole was not drilled by the factory. I would suggest having the hole welded closed.

A previous owner may have had a link there to steer a trolling motor.

Actually, the parts book shows the hole. I have no clue why it is there.

Possibly to help locate the casting in a jig to machine it???
