Have a ’69 25hp johnson which, after completing all repairs, was finishing the job with an impeller change, and of course—the driveshaft was stuck in the powerhead so had to pull the powerhead.

During this process I noticed this screw on the lower side of the powerhead. Is this some sort of water or oil relief orifice that is plugged from prior years?

I will say that I was able to get the driveshaft loose after 30 whacks with a 8lb sledge, and the gearcase ended up being toast (too many stuck screws/broken housing). But the silver lining is this motor had the uncommon 3-lug gearset upgrade from some previous owner. That one is staying my personal collection for a 20hp ’67 model I use personally!

Have you tried using a dead blow hammer to remove a stubborn lower unit?

With no blocks handy and not ever remembering that screw, it may have been a bleeder to cool the shifter area and exhaust housing.

I found a similar screw in a ’55 Big Twin but the experts said it was factory going by the lettering stamped on the block so I put it back in.
