I looked through my library of service manuals for these motors, from the 70’s through the 00’s, and there are several P/N’s. Is the gearcase essentially the same through the various revisions/years? Specifically, the 55hp of the 70’s is a derated 50hp as of 1985?

All the godfathers…I went through my newly acquired library of service manuals which span 1964-2006, and noticed a few trends. 70’s were very random, 80’s go 50-70hp, and 90’s are a more close-knit group of 40-50hp.

Are the gearcases the same across generations?

You may have missed an earlier discussion on this subject.
Props are plentiful for these. Find a junk prop and cut it down. Somewhere around half the blade is a decent place to start.
Simply scribe a circle and cut.

The 40/48/50/55/60 (Small diameter housing) from 1976-1988 will interchange.
Then the 40/48/50 hp motors from 1989-1992 will interchange.
            40/48/50 from 1993-2005 will swap
            70/75 (20 inch shaft) from 1978-late 1981 will swap
            60/65/70/75 from 1982-1988 will swap
            50/60/70 from 1989-2001 will swap
85-140 (Crossflow 13 spline propshaft) from 1978-1991 will swap
88-140 (Crossflow 13 spline propshaft) from 1992-1998 will swap

Your post brought back memories of my favourite fishing motor I used to have, a ’75 55hp Evinrude Looper……thing ran like a scalded ape! Fast for what it was.
