Johnson 35hp RDE-19M serial # 1678636.
The Outboard Book puts that serial # in the range for 1958.
but
The Blue Book shows the starting serial # for a ’58 RDE-19C as 1694787.
Need the correct year to buy the correct parts catalog.
Per previous threads I assume "M" is just noting a parts production change and "M" is after "C"
I appreciate the help for a vintage outboard rookie.
Thanks,
Mike Sims, Florida

April 3, 2017 at 6:57 pm #55461mumbles, weren’t the 1958’s just leftover 1957’s with a color change so the model # suffix difference? Of course the biggies for 1958 were the Super Sea Horse 35 & 50

So "M" is not after "C" so much for that logic.
Maybe it is not representing a parts production change.
Something changed as the ’58 lost 5 pounds from ’57
I do see the color changed every year ’56-’58 but mine is faded so that won’t help me.
Looking forward to bringing it back to life.Mike

They are good motors and very "fixable". They do use a bit more fuel than newer motors, but they don’t cost very much to buy and fix, so it evens out. I have had a lot of fun with mine. Just put it on a light enough boat to get some speed.
April 4, 2017 at 3:19 am #55506I’ve never heard of 58’s being leftover 57’s but it’s possible if OMC was retooling for the ’59 T Stat models. Rope start models weighed the same for both years but I’m not sure about the five pound difference on the electrics. Part of it could be in the flywheels as they have different part numbers or possibly the starters. I do have a small ’58 12 volt starter I should weigh sometime but no ’57 starter to compare it to. The electric starters do have the same P/N though.
Who knows, maybe they were weighed without any oil in the gearcase and that one less rivet holding the emblem on would make a difference to.
