I had to knock a big (11/16" or 3/4") welch plug out of the exhaust can of my 1936 Johnson 300 because it was full of carbon and not exhausting properly (and keeping the motor hot!). I sprayed the inside with oven cleaner then rinsed it out at my local coin-op car wash. i wouldn’t eat off of it, but it looks to be clean enough now. Anyway, any idea where to get a new welch plug of that size?

Also, how do I put it back in? I was thinking of just hitting it with an appropriately sized socket, but what kind of sealant do I need?

Interesting note: when I knocked out the old welch plug, about a thimble full of sand came out with it — i assume this is from the casting — kinda cool after 80+ years.

      Thanks guys.

        Kevin,

        This could be an option.

Any "old time" auto parts, like a NAPA would have something like that. Graduated sizes every 1/16 (or finer) of an inch. Brass or steel, shallow or deep. Drive in with a little sealer, and a socket.

This McMaster Carr option gives you 10 chances to get it installed right. 😀
