I was wondering if anybody knew how to see how much an outboard is worth? I’ve got an old Elgin 2.5 hp and can’t find any like it for sale to compare prices
If you live in an area where outboards are scarce, you’ll do good, otherwise, it’s a shot in the dark. Peter Hunn has a pretty good rap sheet on outboard values, in "The Old Outboard Book" but who knows how current his info is now. That book is a great read, by the way. I highly recommend it.
I took my good running 2.5 Elgin to several club meets and couldn’t get $90 for it. I finally donated it to the Church’s yard sale. They sold it for $80.00.

you’d think it would be worth more than that just by being a working motor even if it is 70 years old it’s history and looks cool. If it wasn’t for the wind’s tendency to pick up and it not having the power to go into it and it not having neutral or reverse I’d run it forever, but having to shut it off every time you want to stay in one spot for a minute or 2 kinda stinks when you’re "redneck fishing" most call it running jug lines.
The outboard market is pretty slumped in most parts of the country. I have found that the only way my motors get any decent return, is to post it on the bay and ship it to where the market is better.
Sears sold a LOT of Elgins. They were generally well made (by West Bend, among others) and many are still around. End result is there are a lot more motors out there than there are people actively collecting them… If someone offers you $100, or even $50, take it…
