Taking nothing away from the OMC motors, you might enjoy something a bit different: a 1959 5 hp Scott/McCulloch. The 1959 had the redesigned, lower placed impellers so the old Scott-Atwater Bail-A-matic bad rap (probably deserved) does not apply. Another (admittedly, not 1950s) is the 1961-63 Mercury Merc 60 or Merc 110. With these motors, changing the impeller is dead easy (quite unlike the earlier Mercs) and they are good runners.
I totally agree, the OMC motors are great, but there are some other choices too. I have a 1954 Corsair Navigator 5hp, and a 1956 7.5. Also a 1953 Scott Golden Pennant. All non-bail-o-matic full gear shift motors. Also I can’t say enough for the Merc 60 as a sweet running easy to maintain little motor. My Merc 60 will easily outrun my 1958 7.5 Fleetwin. (I love my fleetwin, but it is not a fast motor.)
