Hello everyone. I’ve got the urge to get a motor older than what I’m used to working on. Right now my oldest motor is a 1951 10 hp johnson. Anyway , two motors I’ve come across and I was thinking of purchasing one. First is a 1940 johnson deluxe twin 5hp. Complete with full cowling. second is a 1938 3 hp sea king. It is also complete. Any thoughts on maybe which one might be a better candidate? Thanks!

November 6, 2019 at 11:27 am #186575Going from memory but isn’t the sea king essentially a Thor? The Johnson would probably be easier to source parts for. The sea king would fit the “more different “ category. You should just get both. Can never have too many future projects in the waiting.
November 6, 2019 at 1:20 pm #186580That’s the truth! Problem is I have a lot of projects waiting! Lol They both look like a lot of fun. Also looking at a 51 evinrude 7.5 with a neutral clutch. they are all tempting!!
November 6, 2019 at 3:34 pm #186590The Sea King name, which was sold my Montgomery Wards bought motors from many different companies. OMC, Mercury, and other manufacturers had special motors that were sold thru MW. Gale Products (OMC) dated back in the early 30’s and Mercury got into the mix with both Sea Kings (Thor) and Wizard outboards. A picture of your motor would help identify it.
