I got the flywheel off the Elgin today, and found this’

Does the integrity of the coating (rubber, plastic?) have an impact on their function? Can I just wrap them in a good electrical tape and, as a former boss would say, "race on it"? I do have the missing chip. I just left it out of the picture for clarity.

      Thanks.

those coils are "shot" … moisture intrusion = corrosion

Let’s hope the donor motor doesn’t suffer from the same issue.

          Thanks.

These can be replaced with OMC universal coils, just replace the coil and not the metal.

I have a second, almost complete motor, same model and all. My original hope was to get both running, but the one is too far gone. I’m having trouble getting the second, or "donor" flywheel off. I don’t have a real puller, but I used a homemade one to get the first one off. So, I hope the donor unit has good coils. But if not, I saw on the Oddjob Motors site the thing about OMC, or Sierra coils fitting right in. I found the Sierras for about $20.00 a piece.

              I’m still hopeful.

If you get real lucky the donor motor may have the old orange shellac coils. Those things are bulletproof.

Yea….I usually don’t have that kinda luck. But time will tell. I dug out a torch to apply a little heat to get that flywheel off.

I had another thought at dinner. I have a Sea King(Gale) 5 hp twin. It has bad rod bearings, but it might have the Wico coils. And I’ll bet that flywheel will come off a lot easier. I’ll try the torch first, but if that doesn’t work….

I’m thinking your Sea King will have this style mag and coils in it.

Or. Depending on year, they may look like these:
