And I can see that slit in the drawing on the Elgin website, so I know just where to poke. But water needs to be coming out the leg as well, right?
August 16, 2015 at 4:28 pm #22130And….no. Poking didn’t solve the issue. So, I’ll be spending the day disassembling it AGAIN to find the clog. Actually, I haven’t had it that far apart as of yet, but the day is young.
August 16, 2015 at 4:34 pm #22132I am curious why it stalls. It’ll run for about 20 to 25 seconds, sneeze, and die. It will start right back up, and I don’t want to push it without water flow, but I’d still would like to know.
August 16, 2015 at 6:12 pm #22137And while I’m waiting for it to cool(or dreading , your choice), I’d like to ask a couple more questions. First, what is this fitting on the bottom of the head? The donor motor just has a simple plug.
And what is this small hole for? This is a pic of the donor motor, of the top of the leg where it fits the bottom of the power head. I looked at the corresponding hole on the block, and it is just a cavity that seems to go nowhere.
Thanks again.
Stan
August 16, 2015 at 9:06 pm #22148THE FITTING IS POSSIBLY A FLUSH PLUG. Does it pass water? Only the 2.5 hp single model should pass water
Some models drained some of the crankcase fuel to lube the swivel tube. Others didnt. I think the hole is for lubing the swivel.
August 16, 2015 at 11:11 pm #22156I don’t know if it passes water. I’m going to disassemble most of the engine, except the head and cylinders/crankcase. I will blow air in there and see where it comes out. My goal is to make sure all water passages are clear. While I’m in there, I’ll replace all the gaskets. I had re-used all of the intake gaskets, as they were mostly intact, and I didn’t have the gasket paper to make new. But when I got to the lower unit, I was forced to get some. There are water jackets on the left side which will require 2 gaskets, and something on the right side.
August 16, 2015 at 11:47 pm #22160Beware of removing the left side exhaust covers. The screws almost always break. They go into the water jacket. You should not have to remove them.
August 17, 2015 at 1:28 am #22171But it seems to me that there’s a clog in the cooling system. How do I go about clearing it?
August 18, 2015 at 2:52 pm #22250Update. I took it apart again, except for the side covers. I did remove the powerhead as to get to the water lines and blow compressed air through. That fitting on the bottom of the cylinder head does pass water(air), so it may be a flush point. I may have to make something to go there, as I will be using the motor in salt water, and I don’t want to leave it in storage all salty. I cut new gaskets for the carb and reed block, as well as the powerhead/lower leg. While I had it apart, I was able to reinstall the lower unit to the leg whilst the leg was upside down. There is a small brass plate that may have been in wrong, due to not being able to see it correctly, but reassembling it upside down allows for gravity to help, and a clear line of vision.
It’ll be a day or two before I get to put it in a bucket of water and fire her up, but I am hopeful that it is right.
August 20, 2015 at 12:55 am #22376The good news is that it pumps water like a champ. The bad news is I can’t keep it running. I think I have to overhaul the carb again. I think I missed something.
