Cracked coils in a motor of that vintage should be no surprise. They are a standard feature!

When you go to check the thermostat, clean it up a bit and check the build date stamped on the bottom of the flange.  This one dated September 1959 came out of a 1960 motor and was long overdue for replacement.

I’m not sure which surprise is more pleasing, finding an unmolested
motor with cracked coils, or one with brand new German made coils!

          Prepare to be boarded!

Good looking motor that will make for a fun project.   Mumbles brings up a good point on the thermostat – when I restored my 1959 QD-20 a couple years ago, it still had the original ’59 thermostat.  At least it was stuck open.

Finding original cracked coils is a great thing IMHO.  That motor has probably been sitting for decades;  they don’t wear out when they are sitting un-used.  Nice find!

well  sadly…   😉 the thermostat was no virgin.         Nor was it a Spring chicken  being dated  6/74  …48 years  old

Thanks Mumbles for pointing out those birth marks on the rim    🙂

it  basically  ” looks” ok   and  I’ll be testing  it in hot water unless recommendations  to reuse it come in to the contrary ….

                    UPDATE  nov 01….

Well… both coils certainly gone  and from the boots they measure in the high Meg ohms  even after  turning and twisting the plug boots and wires …

condensers will be tested using my home built  Mr.Mohat test box

the rest looks pretty good … i’ll hold off till the big snow comes so I can keep busy 🙂
