Proud new owner of a 1956 Shepherd Junior with a 1956 30hp Johnson RD 18C.

This is my first boat.  I would appreciate any advice on how to winterize boat and motor as I may have to store outdoors thru the winter if I can’t find an affordable indoor storage option in Connecticut.  I can bring the motor into my shed but the boat and trailer wont fit into my garage.

For the motor, should I just drain the fuel or run the motor until it’s dry to ensure its empty?  I understand that I should also remove plugs and spray fogging oil in the cylinders.

Any tips to share with a newbie?

      Thanks

lots of opinions…I have  always store  with fully  fueled carb (S)  with fuel having fuel saver mixed in before my last season run.    ,   store the engine vertically and make certain the GC drains all the water . if you have a small drain hole on the side of the GC  clear it out  to let any water out

drain and replace the gear oil till it comes out the top  vent screw ( if  you  had  water  come out or coffe cream color oil you should reseal the GC next Spring….see utubes if you plan to do it. Some   just chainge the oil mid  season and don’t bother  if not to severe. )Pull the prop  check for mono line ,  grease and reinstall.   Mono line  is what destroys the prop shaft  GC seal  🙁

to fog the innards  get a can of  fogging oil and spray it in the carb to near suffaction a few times.  Pull  the plugs after  and  spray the cyl. walls  and rotate the FW   to spread the foamy stuff

After  oiling the innards  one alternative (opinion) is to  drain the carb by removing the lower HS needle.  reinstall with the same amount of turns to take it out.  fine tune in the Spring

clean and check the gap on the plugs and reinstall

tarp the whole rig and put it to bed after draining all boat  cavities  , remove the  boat drain plug and tilt up slightly.

Put a note in the boat to reinstall the drain plug  before launching   🙂
