My response to you question has disappeared
After trying to make an addition so I will try this.
The ooze coming from the exhaust would
seem to indicate to much fuel. When a motor
wont start take out the plug an check to see if
it is wet. If it is shake out the fuel or better yet
blow it dry with air. Spin the motor over a
dozen times or more with the plug out. Then
put the plug back in and with the mixture screw
closed all the way try to start the motor so it
can clean itself out. To start a motor by bouncing
it off compression you need to have the spark
plug firing after TDC. As you spin the motor
backwards the plug fires before the piston reaches
TDC causing the motor to reverse direction and
take off going forward. When your spinning it
backwards the point that you releasing the knob
is where you want the plug to fire.

Tubs, Thanks! After I thought about what you said a bit, and drew myself a picture,
it makes perfect sense. I’ll have to check my homemade timer to see if I have
enough “retard” capability built in, then give it another “go”.
          Much appreciated!

To find the point where you want the timer
set at, spin the flywheel as if your trying to
start the motor. Notice where you release
the knob. Set the timer so you get the spark
at this point. If the timer is set too far past
TDC it wont have enough “kick” to get
the motor spinning forward. You may feel
it fire as your pulling the flywheel back. If
not far enough past TDC there is no spark to
start the motor. From time to time you want
to be checking the plug to be sure your not
flooded and spin the flywheel with the plug
out to be sure you don’t have an over rich
mixture till you learn the correct fuel and timer
            settings for starting.
