August 26, 2025 at 8:00 am #299263First thing is to id the boat.Builders used different methods as well as materials and finishes (hopefully no one fiberglassed the hill.If you know the builder you can find specific groups on line for advice.Research places to buy appropriate lumber especially planking.Start assembling a collection of hand tools and learn how to use them and keep them sharp.Inspect every piece of boat for damage.I use a small pointed knife to poke around looking for rot.Pay special attention to joints and any discolored areas.Carefully check where planks and transom join.Rig a way to turn boat upside down to make bottom work easy.Take lots of pictures. You’ll have learned a lot and you’ll have a lot of satisfaction when done.

August 27, 2025 at 7:51 pm #299363Stanley you said hopefully no one has fiberglassed the hull. I am restoring a 1958 peterborough dart and thinking of fiberglassing the hull. Is that a no no?
August 28, 2025 at 7:36 am #299373It’s your boat and you’re free to do what you want with it.I’ve seen the long term effects on old wood hulls and would not recommend it.Fiberglass makes the hull heavier and susceptible to rot.A lot of old strip planked boats and canvassed canoes have been ruined with fiberglass. There is a wealth of information on the subject so research thoroughly before you proceed.
