Hard to believe that five seconds would do that much damage.

Yeah, sure does seem hard to believe, but this damage only takes seconds. Once the preignition begins, takes only seconds to melt down the piston dome.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

so I pulled this motor apart today, and unfortunately broke the inner ring on a replacement piston as I was getting ready to replace the top piston with a good quality replacement piston. Unless anyone has a NOS inner 25hp ring, I guess I’ll have to settle with salvaging everything short of the cylinder and crankcase.

There was some scoring on the top piston with the rings not worth trying to reuse, but the cylinder looked salvageable without a 0.30 oversize boring. Hate to throw this powerhead into the scrap pile due to sentimental reasons, but not worth banging my head against the wall!

          Crank looks fine.

This motor has already donated components short of the crankcase/cylinder to at least 5 other motors which are living on in everyday service. Was hoping to save the heart for personal reasons…though!
