“It might be time for you to do some research as to what other model motors used that housing and start to be on the lookout for a parts motor”

If you were going to do what CK mentions there, to help broaden your search for a cheap parts motor, the 50s and 60s 5-1/2 and 7-1/2 HP and maybe the first few years 6 HP use that 376074 bearing housing and the 300599 > 327031 seal.

I’ve seen some that would probably work, but they’re not wanting to part with them very reasonable! Thanks for your input!

I’ve had pretty good luck shopping Ebay with the part numbers.  Every once in a while the odd part does pop up and usually priced a lot better than Marineengine.

As I’ve posted before, i have a 1956 gale 5 hp model 5d13b! Think i have my lower unit in check now! Have run the little motor and when she is running she is all run and no quit! That said a friend who is a boat mechanic told me a lot of those motors the second cylinder didn’t kick in til a certain higher rpm any info on this would be helpful

That being a motor with the ubiquitous “Universal Magneto” from OMC….I have not heard that per se.  Although there are a lot of issues that could mis-firing at low RPM.

Have you duplicated this condition in your motor?  If such a thing is happening you could verify it by spinning the motor over with a drill and observe spark on both cylinders at various RPM’s.

Assuming you have done the full service of the ignition and mis-fire is occurring;   I would swap components  from one side to the other:  Coils, spark plug wires, points , condensors.  Also check for mag-plate “wobble”;  a condition that can cause point gap to vary.

Not all coils are “created equal”.  If you have access to a Merc-O-Tronic or Stevens or similar you could check each coil….but swapping them from side to side is also a good test.

PS:  You might be better starting a new thread regarding this new topic.

This Bearing and Seal Housing PN 376074 and its replacement PN 382796 was used on what must be millions of OMC motors from at least 1954 (and possibly as far back as 1950) up into the 1970’s. By placing an ad on the classified section of this site, you might get what you need.

Regarding the misfire of OMC outboards with the universal magneto at lower RPM’s, this is not “normal”. As seakaye12 points out, there could be numerous reasons for that within the ignition system. This is a classic symptom of dirty/oxidized points and may not show up when using neon spark tester.

Popping and farting… many times is a bad condenser.  I have had new ones that were junk right out of the package.

Thank you! For all of your input! I questioned the validity of my friend’s knowledge on this! I’ve tested and moved coils and tested numerous times! Im inclined to think it being a condenser ! Ive winterized my motor, but with your input and some new condensers, i will give it a go in early spring! Any way of testing condensers out of the box! I have tested capacitors, but not condensers! Thanks again all! I have replaced plugs to proper plugs! New copper core plug wires also! Maybe this will get it smothed out! We she is running right, she is a hoss!!
