Hi, I’m a new member here, I’ve had several old outboard motors over the years but just recently got re-interested in them.
I have an opportunity to buy an older Elgin but I can’t id it. Can anyone here help?

What does it say on the metal tag on the steering handle?

They were made for several years in the 1950’s. I’d put this one in the late ’50’s.

Looks to be 5 or 7.5hp outboard with the neutral clutch. It is probably a 7.5hp Elgin. See if the seller can send you the model and serial number on the metal on the tiller handle.

Ok, I’ve searched several times and cannot find any reference to this model number, can anyone help with a year? I also need to know the fuel line routing it’s a little confusing on where the line from the tank goes. I have gotten the motor un-stuck and have compression and spark. here is a photo of the serial number tag.

Can’t quite make out the model number on the ID tag but . Looks like maybe 571.58762 which would be a 1954 model, 7.5hp. If that’s not the number, here’s a link to a model number listing – maybe you can match it up.

If the model below is correct a 1954, but it seems the color and pattern seem like for a later year. 1956 to 1957????

If the price is right and it has good compression, I would buy it. You can put OMC coil cores on the laminates. Points and condensers are still available. Those have nice power for there size. Easy to work on. You can easily make your own gaskets!!!!

Some link to assist with your motor.

I just realized it is very hard to see. the model number is 571.58782
                        serial number 782 19984
This is whats throwing me off, I can only find the number going up to 58781
                        Thanks.
Also, are those red handels common? I can’t find any photos showing those. I did buy the motor for $60.00 the other day.
