does anyone know of an inexpensive match to the Johnson dull silver paint used on the 1954 models?
Also – I have leftover green seahorse paint from my 1955 RD-17 restore project. is it the same green paint that was used on the 1954 models?

      thanks.

1954 and 1955 use the same Seahorse Green. If you don’t want the 54 Dull Aluminum from North York Marine, I found the Cast Coat Aluminum from Dupli-color is a pretty close match but not as glossy a finish.

Like bobw says, the cast aluminum paint leaves a rather rough or porous finish. I save it for mag plates and carbs but Valspar Plasti Kote makes a nice dull aluminum paint in lacquer which leaves a smoother finish. T-41 is the Plasti Kote part number.

Mumbles, How are you finding the Plastikote T-41 holding up? Do you use it for the whole motor or just certain parts?

Nobody seems to stock it at the moment. I found a store online that said they had it but when I stopped in this morning to buy it they in fact did not have it. I sent an email to the company so we’ll see if they are even in business anymore.

I get the T-41 at my local auto supply and if it or any other color I want isn’t in stock, they can order it in as they deal with Valspar products. As for durability, it’s like any other spray can paint and will scratch if treated rough. Valspar is a major player in paint and I use their base/clear automotive paints now instead of DuPont.

You know you’re in trouble when you can’t find it on amazon or ebay.
