but when in doubt, I usually start with about 1-1/4 turn on the HS,
and 3/4 turn on the low speed.

Did you mean the opposite?? 3/4 turn high speed, 1.5 turns low speed??
Interesting indeed. But, I’m wondering just what models this page was meant for…Doesn’t really say. I guess most models (produced back when this was written) conform to these initial settings…
On the hundreds of different smaller Johnsons I have ran most needed at least 3/4 on the high.I always start with 1and 1/2 on both.When its cold in the fall you usualy have to open the slow speed needle to get the motor running than adjust after it warms up.
