I’m trying to outfit my nephew’s boat with a dependable 5.5 hp motor. I have a 5514, 1957 that runs great, lower unit is tight, but doesn’t pump well at idle. I assume it’s due to a pitted water pump housing. NOS part costs about $75. There are replacement kits with a more modern style impeller and plastic housing with a stainless steel liner. Can anyone confirm that these are dependable?
      Thanks,

      Tom

OMC used them in their ’77 – ’79 six horse motors as standard equipment and they are all you can get from the dealer now. I’ve installed about thirty of them in the last few years without any issues.

Yes, the new OEM plastic housing kits seem to be more durable than the old style aluminum impeller housing….No comment about the aftermarket stuff though…
Those worn aluminum impeller housings really do impair pump performance….Especially in neutral or reverse…

I put the updated style pump impeller/liner/housing in my Johnson 5.5 and it seems to work fine, although I do not have very many hours on it yet.
