I’m trying to outfit my nephew’s boat with a dependable 5.5 hp motor. I have a 5514, 1957 that runs great, lower unit is tight, but doesn’t pump well at idle. I assume it’s due to a pitted water pump housing. NOS part costs about $75. There are replacement kits with a more modern style impeller and plastic housing with a stainless steel liner. Can anyone confirm that these are dependable?
Thanks,Tom

Those worn aluminum impeller housings really do impair pump performance….Especially in neutral or reverse…March 29, 2021 at 12:05 pm #235247I put the updated style pump impeller/liner/housing in my Johnson 5.5 and it seems to work fine, although I do not have very many hours on it yet.
