Hello all, and thanks for your past help…..now for a quick question. I started work on a 1955 25hp Johnson with electric start that I’ve had for quite a while. The starter motor was off and in a box when I bought it years ago and I just assumed it fit. Well, it’s diameter is too big ( Auto-Lite 12J ). Should this motor be 6 or 12 volts and what did that starter come off of?

The correct starter was 6 volt.

Are there any more numbers, such as GGW 4801D 12J ? 12J comes up as a 12V generator, not a starter.

Six and twelve volt starters are slightly different in size and need their own mounting bracket. The easiest way to tell them apart is the six volt ones have an inspection band on the lower part while the twelve volt ones don’t.

Can you post a photo of this unit?

I think the early 6V starters (pre-1955 or thereabouts) were larger than the 6V starter used on the 1955-56 25-30hp. Don’t have the books to check it out. In any case, the 6V starters all had a band around the brush end.

I found same as Frank so also believe that early 6V starters are larger than later 6V starters. Also 12V starters are smaller than the later 6V starters.

Not sure if this info applies to your 25 hp. But here goes.

When I upgraded my 57 Big Twin 35 to a 12 volt starter I was having fits trying to figure out why it didn’t fit. Turned out that my bracket, Part Number 203572, was for the 6 volt starter. With the help of the guys here I soon learned that I needed the larger diameter bracket Part Number 203944. That one bolted right up to the new 12 volt Arco 5376. I did have to transfer the part with the rubber bushing to the new bracket.

FYI,

I have now successfully mounted a 1957 12 volt starter to a 1956 6 volt starter bracket.. somewhat easy change, you will need a lathe but that is the easy part..

Only 2 pcs need modified…

I used bracket with a part number of 376507, it came off of my 1956 30 hp Electric start…. can someone confirm that that part number is good for a 1956 starter bracket? That is what my 6 volt starter was mounted to.

I have every intention of attempting to make a writeup for the Outboarder…I just lack the time… you WILL need parts from BOTH starters for this to work….

I have the modified rig currently mounted on my 1956 Johnson 30 hp…

And yes it works…

MAK 4033M is Autolites model number for a 1955 Johnson/Evinrude 25 horse 6 volt starter, P/N 277311. It might have been used in ’54 to but I’m not sure.

Richard- can you give a brief reason why would a person need both starters to make it work???
