      Capacitor 10Pcs/Lot SMD Ceramic Capacitor 1812 224K 0.22UF 220NF 100V 630V X7R 10% Non-Polar Capacitor high Voltage C4532X7T2J224K200KC (Capacitance : 630V) : Amazon.ca: Industrial & Scientific

I know  Mr. Mohat’s article (condenser repairs-  Outboarder series) )  recommended 850V  ones  but i’ll eventually try these out  if they arrive.

The last strip disappeared between China and my house  but I was credited by Amazon

so I re-ordered  strip.   about $2.50 CDN each

Those are surface mount caps and very small.

I have the Digikey mylar condensers and since the condensers are out of sight under the flywheel,  why not just connect the bare condenser to the mag plate using the hold down screw for the original condenser and at the points connection post?   No potting, no soldering.  Would such a condenser fail more frequently than one potted in the old condenser can?

hard to say…I have the round yellow ones and  the square brown ones…I will eventually try them all   ( potting  soldering keeps me busy 🙂  )

Should be no problem to install a mylar cap “unprotected” under that flywheel… I have done it several times. Just be sure to secure the cap so that it doesn’t shake or vibrate and possibly fatigue the solid copper wires.

So Crosbyman, how did you make out with these SMD caps?  Small, aren’t they!  Have you tried using them yet and if you did, how did you do it, with a breadboard or did you manage to solder them in circuit?  Photos please or it never happened! ☺

sorry did not work on them yet ….this   is summer time 🙂

I currently  have all my winter projects done  and a nice   johnson 5.5 (white  cd-11 or 12…)  in the shed waiting for snow.

yes SMD’s  are  quite small but  measure .22uf  exactly  and  tested good on the test box  I built (Mohat type 1)   so if I am quick with the  solder iron  i’ll  go with M.Mohat’s  method  and  cover them up with  epoxy  to solididy them  and stuff them in cans .

for some reason I feel very confident they will be  fine.

I’ll have to go back and read the complete procedure for installing them but they could be mounted on a custom PC board which could then be stuffed in a can.  There are several manufacturers in China who build custom PC boards for cheap. All you have to do is submit the dimensions and design and they will look after the rest. A fellow I know of who restores vintage audio gear does this for obsolete burned or broken PCB’s  and says the return time is about one week, depending on the shipper you use.

Actually just gooping them up in epoxy to soldify the welds  &  seems good enough  and  it  insulates the works from the inside surface of the old condenser cans .   A shot of silicone  seals everything up nicely.

the round yellow ones  can be simply  be  attached to ground and the point screws.. hidden away from critical eyes 🙂
