Hello fellow members, I’m taking a Johnson PO 15 apart and my ignition plate is being difficult. I have heated it and tapped it at various places near the crankshaft boss but to no avail. I have attached a photo with a pencil pointing to a recessed slotted ring and I don’t know how this comes out…..do you need a special tool?….or is there an optional method. Please give me some advice……just tried to load picture…..won’t let me! says file is too big.
I believe that split washer is an oil slinger of sorts. That doesn’t need to come
out in order to pull the mag plate off.
Here’s a photo of my powerhead, sans mag plate, and you can see the split washer
in place.
Prepare to be boarded!

Well, I guess that rusty junk of mine had me fooled into thinking the top part came out with the mag plate. Your power head looks great. Let me go back and apply more heat and force and see what happens!
I assume if the mag plate doesn’t pull up, then it’s not swiveling back and forth either?
Patience wins the battle. Gentle heat and lots of pee oil.
With the clamping bolt removed, you can use a big screwdriver in the slot for leverage,
and it may slightly open the hole up to get the mag plate moving.
