The aluminum retaining ring should be flat side up and just needs to oriented so that the holes in the ring would align with the mount holes in the magneto with the top cylinder coil toward the front of the motor.   I’ve never known what the notch in the retaining ring was for.  When you install the flywheel is the magneto plate free to rotate?   One time I got things all bound up when I installed the magneto and had the throttle link arm folded up under the mag plate.   See attached pic to be sure the link arm isn’t folded underneath and making the mag plate and flywheel sit high. Abother possibility might be a bad taper on the flywheel hub.  I had one with a wallowed taper where somebody had installed a shim piece in the hub in an attempt to fix it – see pic.   The shim piece made the flywheel sit high on one side.   Finally, is the flywheel key properly aligned and engaged?

seen some  folks drill a  small hole both sides of the  prop  body and drive a pin  into the rubber hub to  lock  it in place … just use a shear pin instead of a solid drive pin.

temporary fix till you get  a new prop.

but check for prop repair shops …if any for a new new rubber insert

I finished this one up last November after the test barrel was
put away for the winter, so it’s the first time in the water for this one
since I had it for a few years.

This one has the neutral shift, which I was suspicious of if
it was working correctly, as I could hear the motor revving
up. Turns out that it was the prop slipping on it’s plastic hub.
I “think” I got it fixed after this video, but have not retested it yet.

This motor had the “tall” Elgin water pump impeller, that was shot,
and I replaced it with two mercury impellers stacked together,
on a suggestion from Brian Wilcox. It seems to pump water great.
It has a tiny tell-tale at the exhaust cover, but blow out lots
of water out of a series of holes in the exhaust, just above the
            water line.

Speaking of spun hubs, has anybody tried epoxies or silicone or urethane?   I have a OMC brass prop that goes on 25 to 40hp motors from 1950 to ’70 or maybe more.   It needs to be re-hubed.   I don’t need it but it would be nice to have it fixed!   The last one I had fixed cost 65 bucks.   I know urethane has some good adhesion and it would cushion some also.   Any thoughts on this idea?

some prop shops can repair  it but….  it is old and they may or may not have  what it takes.

                ask around

seems I saw  a solution some time ago …drill a hole  (off center) across the prop body and hub and  insert a pin  or  screw to lock hub and prop together.   2 likely need to balance the prop !

change the propeller shaft  drive pin for a brass  pin   because you will no longer have  hub slipping to protect the  prop shaft and gears

Followed the instructions and sure enough the prop is slipping on the rubber hub. Is there a way to fix this or do I need to replace the prop.

Thank you for all the replies I appreciate it.

If it acts like it looses its grip on the water when you increase the throttle, the propeller may be slipping on its hub. There is a piece of rubber between these parts that you usually cannot see. This rubber goes bad and it will behave like it went into neutral when you put a load on it. Some propeller repair shops can fix this, or you can buy a new prop at places like http://www.propcopropellers.com. Take the prop off and mark the hub and prop position with a scratch or a permanent marker. Run it again and see if the marks still line up, or if it slipped.

hi all, I have a 1959 Gale Buccaneer 12hp outboard that I have been working on. I received it as a “gimme” non-runner with the purchase of a boat. It was mildly seized (freed up very easily) when I got it as well as shot (cracked) coils. Here is what I have done.

                        – New coils, points, condensers, cut back HT leads to fresh copper and installed boots and clips. Timing set via point-gap method and then verified with the timing marks and the ohmmeter small resistance change. Seems to be very close but I don’t have the pointer fixture to be certain. plugs gapped to .030″
                        – Carb kit including new float, needle/seat, new gaskets, needle valve packing and very thorough cleaning
                        – inspect fuel pump screen diaphragms etc. no cracks, looks like a recent replacement pump

I have a service manual and after going through and setting everything, the motor runs pretty well in the tank, though I couldn’t really test it at high throttle due to the size of the barrel, cavitation etc.

The motor is mounted on a 12 ft aluminum runabout similar to an Alumacraft, with cable steering and forward controls. This issue I’m having is that it won’t rev and max speed is about 6kts. Won’t even try to plane. I tried changing the angle setting, got max rpm via the high speed jet, but it just seems to lug and won’t rev.

Compression is 80psi in both cylinders, and as far as I can tell it has the stock prop, which I believe is part # 277443 – a 9×10 3 blade. Prop has some damage with a couple of bites in the blades near the hub.

I thought with the above that it should run better than that, so was a bit shocked at the poor performance. Starts easily and will run nicely at idle and part throttle.

I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas, or what I may have overlooked or got wrong.

                        Thanks
