I thought I heard somewhere that the Evinrude 18 fastwin was a hotrod engine in it’s day? This looks like a good winter project, doesn’t it?
I might just buy it. What year, etc.? Can anyone tell w/o calling the guy?November 5, 2016 at 11:31 pm #47039I say 63.
November 5, 2016 at 11:45 pm #47041I have a 56-57 electric for sale in excellent condition.
November 6, 2016 at 12:30 am #47043Yeah, looks like a ’63. Will need some things, including a new recoil starter, as that wiring job to hold down the broken mounting point won’t do the job.
November 6, 2016 at 1:36 am #47045November 6, 2016 at 2:16 am #47046So the guy says it’s running great. Really? All that needs done?
November 6, 2016 at 2:32 am #47049If it is running good might take a look at the coil’s from that access hole and make sure theyou are not cracked and ask when the impeller was replaced last as long as less than couple of years probably ok I would replace the recoil that is cracked and enjoy it they are great running motors have a 57 Johnson and 68 evinrude

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?November 6, 2016 at 3:47 am #47054quote paulfromYork:So the guy says it’s running great. Really? All that needs done? Not necessarily, but we all know what happens to the original coils. A motor might still run with cracked coils but it’s time is limited. Sometimes you get lucky on a motor and find new coils under the flywheel. The T-stats tend to be ignored.
November 6, 2016 at 9:13 am #47063If possible, it would be nice to know compression numbers. I know this is pushing it for some eBay sellers who may not even know what compression means or come back with, "it’s perfect." The reason for asking compression, especially on the Fatwins and Fds, is that they will start, idle and run smooth as a watch with anemic compression. They just won’t have the speed they should. I have brought quite a lot of these guys back from the dead and have seen the difference. They are capable of 120, plus, psi compression but will seem to run great with 95.
Long live American manufacturing!
November 6, 2016 at 12:04 pm #47066Yep, like mumbles said, she is a 62, if the engine cover is correct…You can always look at the ID plate to confirm…These were great engines for sure, but absolutely not "the hotrod of its day". I would look at a similar Merc if speed is your focus.
Like everyone says, you need to plan of doing an ignition/fuel system overhaul, even though the seller claims it has been done already. The water pump impeller should be replaced as well, even if already done. The low water level in the seller’s bucket concerns me.
Good catch on the recoil Lindy.
Like all have said, check the compression, I would remove the lower gear lube drain screw for a second as well to check gear lube condition.
I would probably offer the seller $100, which seems more than fair, I guess it depends how much you desire a decent 1962 Fastwin. -
