This is the first time that I’ve had one of these exhaust covers with the baffle plate apart. I was a little surprised that there is no gasket between part no. 12 the exhaust cover and part no. 14 the baffle plate. It looked like there was some sealer on there however. http://www.marineengine.com/parts/vinta … 000001.htm

What kind of sealer should be used here? Would OMC Gasket Sealer work, or is something else preferred?

3M 847 should work good. How does the inner plate look?

Thanks Zephyr. The plate looks good, but before I cleaned it up, there were powdery rusty color deposits on the exhaust cover side. I suspect that it was from the rusty red primer that OMC used all over on the power heads. Like many of the motors I work on, this is a mixed use motor with both saltwater and freshwater use.

That is common. Pin holes in the little plate are common too, so check it over really good. The pin holes can allow water to squirt into the exhaust ports too and drive mechanics nuts.

Where is Don? This is very close to his 58 Fleetwin favorite motor. Bet he has a E start too! 😛

Yes, there is two gaskets. Good point Wedgie. They will both be different too..

Yes, the ’55 and ’58 will be the same. Infact, I believe that they are the same from ’51 on.

Hey Zeph ! parts diagram and list shows only one gasket there. It’s 13 on the diagram,( part #202580.) At Mumbles recommendation I put an extra gasket between 12 and 14 . Are you still selling the plates Zeph? How about the cap screw lock washers?

yeah, I think the parts breakdown shows only one gasket, don’t know why though, adding another gasket seems like a good idea.
