Where is Don? This is very close to his 58 Fleetwin favorite motor. Bet he has a E start too! 😛

Yes, the ’55 and ’58 will be the same. Infact, I believe that they are the same from ’51 on.

50-53 Fleetwins were very close, but even the 50 had a different crankshaft. Those were all the neutral clutch motors, and the power head is different. Seems to be a completely different powerhead than my 58 Fleetwin. (One of the best looking years for motors Evinrude ever built!)

Very true, but that exhaust cover set up was the same. Go ahead and compare. 🙂

Oh that is probably true. It’s been a while since I looked at a diagram. The gasket i believe will go between the block and plate and just sealer will go between the outer cover and plate, right?

I bet you are correct. The drawing skips # 13 but listed that way the literature may conclude to using two #13 gaskets.
            Steve,
Yes those few years are the greatest! I like my 54 fifteen hp motor looks too……& the way they run so well tuned up too!!

The diagram shows only one gasket and the parts listing only calls for one gasket. I’m fairly certain that the assembly on my motor had not been taken apart before, and I only found the one gasket on the powerhead side.

I like the Mumbles/Wedgie idea of another gasket between the baffle plate and the exhaust cover. Is there any problem with the alignment of the cooling ports on the cover side?

I don’t believe there is an alignment/cooling passage alignment issue with using two gaskets, but you had better look it over prior to final assembly.
And yes, the diagrams are correct, the engines were manufactured with only one gasket, so I’m sure you exhaust cover is original and un-molested.

Thanks D. After a good look over, and if it makes sense, the order will go out for a second gasket. They must have used some great sealant ‘back in the day’ for the exhaust cover side of the baffles.

When the parts were new and straight without any corrosion or pitting, it was probably OK for the factory to use a special sealing compound instead of a gasket. Go forward sixty years and those parts probably aren’t as nice as they once were. I find the price of an extra gasket to be cheap insurance for preventing any annoying leaks in this area. You just have to make sure the screws are long enough now to grab the threads in the block good. 😀

I put a gasket on both sides

Yes, there is two gaskets. Good point Wedgie. They will both be different too..

Hey Zeph ! parts diagram and list shows only one gasket there. It’s 13 on the diagram,( part #202580.) At Mumbles recommendation I put an extra gasket between 12 and 14 . Are you still selling the plates Zeph? How about the cap screw lock washers?

Yes sir, I still have the plates here 😎
