Thanks guys!
I will try and pull the head tonight.
@Fleetwin, I think I hit most of the points lost in the original thread, but I’ll try to add to it by saying that it started out running rouh after struggling to start it (20+ pulls) I may have got water on the lower boot when putting motor on the boat. It ran ok after warm up. I did manage to get my 12′ on plane and then I trolled for over an hour, no issue. I did a few short runs WOT bursts to other spots, then trolled…everything fine.
Longer WOT back to launch and I smelled paint burning. I eased the throttle but it felt like revs dropped sharply with minor grip movement and something felt "off". WOT again and it felt right, like it wanted to run at that speed if that makes sense. It was smooth save for a few misses. It felt like the time I forgot to put oil in the lawnboy gas (had a habit of adding oil to can before going to the gas station…oops) So this is why I wondered if I had run the motor with too lean of a setting or somethingagain, photos tonight if I can get to it
June 15, 2016 at 10:23 pm #38364Frank,
I wonder if that hole is plugged. Does the cavity above in the pic feed the water outlet?
Beerman,
Is that what you drilled out too?
Frank,
Thank you for showing the motor leg.June 15, 2016 at 11:58 pm #38367June 16, 2016 at 12:10 am #38368Great info Frank….Perhaps he went a little heavy on the gasket cement and plugged up that spray hole.
Just looked at your latest photos, powerhead sure does NOT look like it has been overheated, I think Frank has found the problem area.
As for the strange running characteristic you report, it probably has nothing to do with the hot exhaust leg.
Please be sure to pull that gearcase while the powerhead is off and inspect the water pump…Replace the impeller if you haven’t already done so.June 16, 2016 at 12:24 am #38370Does the QD19 have that hole? I drilled a small hole where the red arrows point on page 3 of my question about QD19 overheat.
June 16, 2016 at 12:36 am #38371@Fleetwin, that\s what I thought too. I’m sure the PO said he changed the impeller with all the other stuff he did. He said the carb was rebuilt, which certainly appeared to be the case when I opened it because it was acting up. Totally spotless and brand new inside. I emphatically believe he is legit through and through.
June 16, 2016 at 1:26 am #38374ok, so everything looks ok to my untrained eye…no blocked passages that I can see. Small hole on an angle is clear.
Was thinking of looking at the impeller after all, but how could it be bad if the head is not getting hot?? Surely its getting enough water. Lots of water coming out the stem’s exhaust port. Can this motor be running hot for other reasons? Can burning too much fuel create too more exhaust heat?
Another question, why is the stem not full of water if there are small channels designed to spray water inside it?
June 16, 2016 at 1:27 am #38375June 16, 2016 at 3:13 am #38382OK, I see something in your top picture….Looks like the welch plug is missing from the bottom of the cylinder head….This would allow the water to exit directly from the head bypassing the exhaust housing…
Do you see what I am referring to? The water is not supposed to exit out of the cylinder head, there is a welch plug that is supposed to be there…June 16, 2016 at 3:23 am #38384You should be able to see quite a bit of water coming out of there when running. Definitely needs a plug in that hole. Good catch Don!
