September 13, 2016 at 4:01 pm #43967quote Jeff Register:The evaporator coil cleaner is quite easy on the hands. It will not hurt the filter either. It is made to clean very fragile aluminum coils & isn’t caustic in any way. That is why it works so well. I know when mine are clean running water thru it as the filter flow increases by 300% when it is clean. Just let it dry & use. Also by far has nothing to do with concrete but it sure works on filters. Please try it before you knock it. I realize
it is new to others & expected some resistance as humans resist change. I’m sorry if you don’t try it as it does the job very well. You can have the soap box, I’m done trying to help.I’ll try anything buddy, just tell me where I can get some!
DonSeptember 13, 2016 at 5:49 pm #43975Not everyone watched the Beverly Hillbillies I guess. Maybe y’all aren’t old enough.
Caustic Soda/Sodium Hydroxide is commonly referred to as Lye as in Lye Soap which Granny used to make by the cement pond in quite a few episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies. Is a base that is very good at breaking down fats/greases etc. So, it is caustic by definition even if only mildly so due to dilution. Anyway. Sheesh. I guess I am old or I watched too much TV as a kid…or both.
September 13, 2016 at 6:18 pm #43976I’m sure old enough, and wasted many hours of my life watching Granny and the cement pond!
September 13, 2016 at 7:11 pm #43979at that age i didn’t realize it was a waste of time

Robbie RobertsonSeptember 13, 2016 at 7:23 pm #43981My mother had a supply of caustic soda in crystal form, which she diluted to make cleaners. Apparently on one occasion, some of the crystals got spilled on the floor, and I, being a wobbly toddler at the time, sat down in the vicinity. I still, 75 years later, have a quarter-size scar on the back of my calf. Pretty potent stuff, a little goes a long way !
I’ll bet if you could buy that stuff nowadays, you’d have to dress like a deep-sea diver to handle it.September 14, 2016 at 7:42 pm #44030Yes Don I get it from an air conditioning supplier. Comes in a Qt bottle & looks flourscent green. Once it has done it’s work it will turn dark green. I use a pill bottle to soak it to save material. It is caller Evaporator coil cleaner. It cleans years of build up on the evap coil that becomes like hard water deposits.
September 26, 2016 at 11:39 pm #44775Jeff Register graciously sent me a sample of his air conditioning Evaporator
coil cleaner and I’ve been soaking and back flushing the sintered filter for
the Evinrude the last few days.
I did a timed flow test using water before I started cleaning the filter,
pouring a cup of water in my funnel and marking the time when the
water quit running out of the carb body. After using the solution and
blowing air thru the carb body and filter (reverse of normal flow thru filter)
I gain a 25% improvement in flow thru the sintered filter.
I presume gas would flow thru the filter better than water.
The real test will be when I can get the boat back on the lake!
Thanks Jeff for you help and generosity!

October 2, 2016 at 11:21 pm #45074Update – It was a beautiful, sunny 74 degree day in Minnesota.
That’s awesome seeing how it’s October, so I decided to try
out the subject motor again now that the sintered filter was
cleaned in Jeff’s magic potion.
I’m happy to report that the outboard ran full bore now with no problems!!!
Not sure if the rings on the upper cylinder have fully unstuck yet
(will recheck compression now that it’s been on the lake a couple of times),
but I got 18.4 mph on the GPS with about 330 pounds of human (son and I)
and a little gear aboard, running it on my light 14′ Alumacraft.
Not complaining, but should I expect any better than that with this motor?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
October 2, 2016 at 11:49 pm #45075Sounds like you got that motor running the way it should be. I guess I would check the motor RPMs to see where you are, so you can get full potential of the motor at wide open throttle.
October 3, 2016 at 12:50 am #45083Necks, Perhaps someday I’ll have to invest in a tachometer, but
haven’t really found a need for one, as most of my projects are
10 hp and under. I do have an old 35 hp Evinrude to work on
some day, but will have to borrow a bigger boat to test it!Prepare to be boarded!
