Hey all, thanks for the opportunity to ask questions.
I recently bought a 1956 5hp Sea King motor, model # GG-9001C.
It runs well but needs some lower unit work. I understand that these motors were manufactured by the Gale division of OMC, correct?
A couple of questions …
First off, are there sources to find the parts I’ll need to service the lower unit? Seals, bearings, etc.?
Secondly, would anyone know if the lower unit from a 5hp Gale model 2B7 (serial # 358xxx) will swap onto the Sea King?

May 30, 2025 at 2:14 pm #296886Hello Scott and welcome! What is wrong with your lower unit? You probably know that you must pull the power head to service that lower unit. Plenty of parts are available on ebay. Those gear cases were the same on Johnson/Evinrude/SeaKing/Brooklure and plenty more of the gale manufactured machines. Years 54 through 58 maybe more. They are not easy to rebuild. They have a tendency to leak water. If yours is leaking just change the grease once in a while. Make sure it’s empty before freeze up time.

The seals seem to be gone in the foot. I can wobble the shaft back and forth by hand and I’m assuming I should not be able to do that.
It feels pretty gritty when turned by hand, so I’m thinking there’s no grease in it at all.
I have located a Gale 2B7 and if its lower unit is good, I thought I could possibly swap it onto the Sea King so I could use it while rebuilding/repairing the original.

It is hard to reply to your concerns, much of what you report may be normal. I guess the best place to start is to drain and inspect your gear lube.
