I have finished a Glen L Super Sparton, and I am just about to put it in the water. This is just a fun boat for neighbors and quests to take a spin in. My question is with the deadman throttle I suspect the novice drivers will let go of it completely as soon as they “get scared” and the engine will shut off. They will never be able to start it on the water with the rope start and will need to be towed in. The engine has a throttle stop that I can set to keep it at idle but that of course eliminates the safety factor.
Any thoughts?
June 14, 2023 at 8:46 am #277031- not sure you would want novices to just take a spin in a race boat with a 30h. Might be too much motor for some people.
June 14, 2023 at 9:29 pm #277057the other thing is that I have been told that the lower unit is the weak link to this set up being that it is a class B lower unit and not really built for the extra power of the 30 so it is best to be gentle with it.

I used to race D Hydro/Mercury44XS. You want the motor to shut off when the deadman is released. Always have a chase boat. Safety first.
I see you have a home made steering bar with a tension spring. I personally never used a spring although, I have seen them, most don’t use them.
You want the steering cables very tight with no play. You need to be able to let go of the wheel and have it not move. One hand on the throttle one on the wheel.
You want to be able to move your hand along the wheel without loosing control. Also run a rope from the handles across the motor. If you flip, you don’t want the motor
flying all over the place. As stated above, the A/B/C gearcases are the same. If you’re near western Pennsylvania, I have a real steering bar to give you.
Have Fun! Go Fast turn Left.
Sincerely,
Doug
June 15, 2023 at 8:13 pm #277064Thanks for the replies. I think I will retard the throttle to 1/2 until I see how it goes and depending on who is driving. Doug, thanks for the offer but I am in MN. Do you think I need the rope as I have the motor clamped and bolted to the transom?
June 15, 2023 at 9:50 pm #277065Terry,
The purpose of the rope is to keep the motor from tilting up and down during a flip which could cause damage to the motor and transom. Run the rope across the tower above the exhaust outlet.
Retarding the throttle 1/2 may or may not work. You will most likely need full power to get on plane. Once on plane you can back off.
A hydroplane works buy trapping air between the sponsons. Once on plane the the only parts in the water are the back of the sponsons and
the back by the motor. The rest will be riding on air. Depending on motor height the prop will be on or near the surface. My D hydro runs at 0 which is max height per APBA rules.
That is the prop shaft is even with the bottom of the boat. best to start low and work your way up. The best thing to do is go to the APBA or NBRA website and see if there is a stock/mod/pro race near you.
Get a Pit pass (free just sign the waiver) and talk to the drivers and look at their set ups. Racers are a friendly bunch.
Be careful, have fun. Let us know how it works out.
Don’t know why my posts are double spaced. When I grew up the only computer was on Star Trek.
Sincerely,
Doug
June 15, 2023 at 10:10 pm #277066OK, I understand the rope now. And I see the throttle issue. I’ll post how it goes.

Don’t take this the wrong way but
ARE YOU CRAZY?????
What if someone gets hurt in it or
hurts someone else? See how fast
your friend, or neighbor, gets a lawyer
to make it your fault. Nobody excepts
responsibility for their actions anymore.
Example – Man goes to a bar, gets
drunk, get in a car, hurts or kills
somebody, and its the bartenders fault.
Your sticking you neck out letting
someone borrow a tube to go
swimming in today’s world.

Oh I see.
Well then –
ARE YOU CRAZY?????
Women that you attract with stuff –
can often end up getting lawyers to
take ALL your stuff.
