Can the lower pan / cowling be removed without pulling the power head?
I have a manual ordered that covers the Merc Mark 25 models, but in looking
at photos of those, they appear to be a “two piece” pan, whereas, the Wizard
is one piece.I believe I was told by the seller that it ran, but would probably need a new impeller
and the fuel pump rebuilt. The seller mentioned the fact that these motors are known for “jumping” into
forward gear easily, or by themselves.
I read a post a year ago regarding someone else’s WN7A with that problem,
and BobW mentioned a couple of detents, upper and lower.
My motor shifter seems like it suffers from this problem, as it shifts into Forward,
while not running, very easy.
Will this part of the motor be the same as the Mark 25, and hence, covered in the manual?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
October 15, 2023 at 7:38 pm #281700I have had the same problem with my1963 200. I too believe dis is reverse lock out too. Don’t advance the throttle when starting too much & have a new choke butterfly to seat well on the carb body to try to prevent.Replace the choke spring too to get a tight fit. it needs to be tight holding the bbutterfly tight against the carb body to draw fuel from thr low speed jet too..Some newer straight 6 motors have fuel primers on the carbs for easier starting because of this lean start condition even warm starting.
Those choke sliders need to be spot on to work correctly And what Dave said.

October 15, 2023 at 10:13 pm #281710Don’t know about the Wizard models, but the Mark 25’s certainly had the jumping into gear problem. Dang near all of them that I’ve seen.
October 15, 2023 at 11:04 pm #281711Thanks for the replies. I can’t tell anything from the fuzzy parts diagrams on Marine Engine,
so hopefully my manual will have some good photos.
I watched some videos on YouTube this evening, and noticed more that one
person had the shift handle tied with a string so it couldn’t shift into forward!Prepare to be boarded!
October 16, 2023 at 6:16 pm #281750Did a little checking today.
I believe the compression is pretty good…… 112 & 110 psi.It had no spark, but a quick polishing of the points cured that issue.
I checked the gearcase, and a little water came out along with some gear lube.
I thought I had the gearcase “vent” plug removed, but found out when I tried to pump
in fresh gear lube, that it was a “flush” plug. I found a little vent screw but it’s froze,
hence I only got a tiny bit of lube pumped back in.Not sure if the water pump impeller is
any good or not, seeing how I forgot to put the flush plug back in when I test ran it,
I guess I won’t know until Spring…… by then I should have gone through all the little
issues and have installed a new impeller!I removed the impeller before I test ran it so I wouldn’t blow all the water out of the
barrel. It only ran a few seconds before it jumped into Forward gear…… guess
I have some work cut out for me.This motor has “Powermatic” in it’s name. Is there anything special about the gearcase
or problematic I need to be on the lookout for?VIDEO…….
https://youtu.be/d3RYNv1KZKQNot sure if the coils are original or not, but they look good and run the motor.
There’s a little hole in the shifter handle…..
is that originally there? If yes, for what?Prepare to be boarded!
October 16, 2023 at 6:31 pm #281753yes, the shifter handle hole is original. it is for remote shift controls. coils look like replacements.

Good to know, I though perhaps someone was using that hole to
hook up a bungee cord to keep it from jumping into gear!Prepare to be boarded!
