In assembling my 1957 Evinrude Sportwin 10hp propeller shaft gears back into the gear case after inspection there doesn’t appear to be a pin that aligns the front bearing into its place, yet there is a hole for one, part #19 on the Sportwin Gear Case diagram, as well as a hole in the gear housing, photo attached. I do not remember a pin when I disassembled the prop shaft gears, nor is there one that I can see on the gear case parts diagram.

For the rear gear housing and assembly part #25 there is a pin in the gear housing that fits the alignment hole on part #25.

Last month I assembled the gears back into my 1958 10 hp Sportwin and there was an alignment pin in the front gear and a tab for the rear. So this is not consistent.

My question, does the front bearing and gear case have an alignment pin. It seems like there should be one, is one necessary.

      Thank you.

Yes, and yes. What would happen if you leave it out? Probably nothing, but why gamble.

Thanks for your reply, but I didn’t notice any pin in the gear case for the front bearing only a hole when I took it out, nor is there a pin shown on the gear case parts diagram. I certainly could cut a suitable diameter drill bit to the correct length and insert it. Don’t want to gamble when fabricating a pin to size is not difficult. Thoughts on that.

          Thank you.

The empty hole in the gearcase is where the pin should be and it keeps the thrust bearing from spinning and the oil passages aligned correctly. A piece of drill bit epoxied in will be perfect.

Thanks for the reply. I will certainly follow your suggestion.

              2 questions:

Could the motor have operated all these years without the pin or did I lose it on disassembly.

Is the pin missing from the parts diagram. The diagram I have is from a 1956 Evinrude Sportwin I could not get a 1957 diagram.

              Thank you.

Look again at your parts diagram. Picture shows a pin at aft bearing, but if you go to the part numbers page it shows it as part number 300611 Dowel 2 req’d In other words one front and one aft.. It COULD have operated all these years if it didn’t spin, but I’d rather say you or somebody else lost it.

That sounds reasonable and appreciate the comment and most of all that I discovered it before anything got damaged. All components are in very good shape.

Will reassemble and hopefully test soon.

Frankr what’s the answer if a previous owner smashed the pin down because he didn’t align it with the hole in the bearing? Is there a way to remove it? I see that a lot. Thanks.

Redrill both bearing and housing to fit new pin.

It may have gotten lost in the past, perhaps during another disassembly process. Not uncommon. It would be good to put on in.
Those lowers in that year are the same as the 18’s of that year, so finding another pin should be easy.
Also, that was the last year that the 10hp had the same lower as the 18 too and it’s much better than the lower that was used on the ’58 and later, IMO.
