1957-35-HP-Parts
Quick question I have pulled my powerhead and the exhaust cover to check that the inner baffle plate didn’t have a pinholes in it which fortunately it doesn’t.It seemed like there were two gaskets on the inner side of the baffle plate as well as the outer side when I pulled it apart. I checked the exploded parts diagram and it shows needing two 304762 gaskets for both item 32 outer and 34 inner on the attachment. I want to confirm this is correct as I was always under the impression if you want something to leak install two gaskets and since these gaskets are critical to keeping the water out of the exhaust chamber is a single gasket now preferred?
There is obviously not a clearance issue in this location that I can think of so not sure why two would be needed? Perhaps due to the heat? Are the current versions 0f the 304762 thicker thus no longer needing two of them? If two are indeed needed what is the preferred sealer to use between them at this location. I don’t see a lot of specifics in the Johnson Manual regarding this and want to make sure I do it correctly. Any advice appreciated!

It seems weird they list the inner and outer as different reference numbers and the quantity required is 2 each for both. You would think they would have just referenced both as reference 32 since they are the same part number.

Usually two of the same gaskets will be given the same call out number, then list that two are needed. This breakdown gives two different call out numbers, even though they are the same gasket, then each call out calls for two gaskets needed.
November 18, 2025 at 8:03 pm #301622Thank you to both of you! I will use 1 gasket on each side of the ss baffle plate.
I plan to lap both the cover and flat side of the baffle plate as well since they both rock a little when placed on a flat surface.I also plan to coat both gaskets with permatex aviation gasket maker as well based on what I have seen recommended in other posts.
