      Hi there,

I’ve got an unhappy mag with no spark, and after carefully reviewing the service manual I’ve realized that it might be best to look for someone who might offer a mag repair service.  Acquiring the correct tools to set the point tension, dwell, etc would be a daunting task for me, so any leads on who might be able to service my mag would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

They are easy to do. Pull te flywheel, drive belt & the four screws holding the distriburer to the drive unti. Pull the distributer from the engine & now you can check everything with a meter. I’ll bet you need to remove the drive unit & soak in solvent for a few days to clean the bearings & regrease. What color is your distributer cap? some had problems. Next replace the capacitor (condenser). & check the coil with your meter. If tun not connected to the spark plugs, all of them running the coil may be bad. Cleaan everything up, check the   cap for arcing & you need a rotor puller to remove from the shaft. Once the distribeter drive spins freely regrease as it’d always forgotten in maintance. I’m suprised you read about the points tension, very few read that. All the tool is spring tension gauge. If not set correctly it will wear out the rubbing block on the points changing thec dwell & destoying the pointd or if too weak the poits will float. There are sourses to fix the mag out there & I found a point tention tool easily on line. Any questions ask here. It’d not as bad as it loks to do oce you have done one.P.S. replace the distributer drive belt too! Do not try replacing the bearings in the distributer drive unit, they are a night mare to replace. Mercury sold a new drive unit if the bearings went  bad. Been there done that!!

Thanks so much Jeff for the detailed reply!  After I get the mag off I’ll take a look under the cap, which by the way is black in color, and see if there’s anything obviously amiss, test the coil, etc, and go from there following you’re advice.  It’s good to know that I don’t necessarily need all the special tools called for in the manual, and might be able to get away with an aftermarket tension gauge.  If all else fails I’ll reach out to Travis @waterhogsworks.com. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out!

              Hi Travis,

Thank you for the reply.  I plan on pulling the mag off this weekend and taking a closer look at things.  I’ll definitely reach out to you through your website in the event things don’t go so well.  I feel better moving forward knowing that there are experts out there like you who can help me save this motor!

It’s not hard after doing one. You do need the rotor puller though. Everyone breaks the rotor without the tool. Looks like a set of pliers only forked & as you use it

it opens forcing the rotor off the shaft.
