I am looking for a water pump kit and parts number for a 1960 3hp Sea King/Buccaneer. I am having trouble finding the part. Any help would be appreciated!

January 13, 2026 at 8:36 pm #303392I believe that motor uses the wobbler rotor style water pump – part numbers are:
Wobbler rotor is OMC #550683
gasket for the gearcase housing is 550681
the eccentric cam for the rotor is 550671
the propshaft seal is 550684
I rebuilt a ’57 Sea King 3hp a couple years ago and those are the part numbers I used for that job. I also have a parts list for a ’62 Sea King 3hp and they have the same part numbers so I’m sure yours would be the same. I found all these parts readily available on Ebay. Hope this helps.

My childhood motor was a 1960 3hp gale buccaneer that my uncle won in a fishing rodeo. I fell in love with boating with that thing. I have been looking for one for years but never had the time or effort to search or knowledge to refurb one. In December I found a 1960 3hp Sea King (had just recently learned they were the same motors with different stickers and colors) online that was in mint condition that an art collect had in MN. I purchased and had it shipped to AL and it is in better shape than I could have imagined. Fired right up but not pumping water so here I am looking for water pump kit. Thanks again for the help and yes, my first big score from joining AOMCI!!!!!
January 14, 2026 at 3:04 pm #303420Ellis – glad to help. You may find the prop shaft seal has been leaking allowing the gearcase grease to get into the pump rotor chamber and gumming up the works with grease or swelling up the rubber rotor to where it won’t pump water. Here’s some pics from my ’57 Sea King project showing the pump rotor as found and the rebuild with a new rotor, cam and drive pin. If you should need a new drive pin for the cam, the part number for that is #550672.

January 17, 2026 at 11:42 pm #303526Bob, when I was working on my water pump and starting to reassemble my lower unit I noticed I had gear oil leaking from the top of my lower unit/drive shaft housing. Not sure what I did to cause this. Is this normal or is there some sort of seal leaking? I also noticed when I put my drive shaft in it didn’t seem to fit all the way in the gear case or turn my propeller shaft when I twisted it. The square end goes into the power head and splines go into foot correct? Not sure if this is connected to the leaking gear oil or not.
See photos attached.
January 18, 2026 at 12:17 am #303532Which end of the driveshaft has more oil on it? For the rotation from the powerhead to make it to the propellor, the lower end of the driveshaft has to reach into the gearbox to grab a gear. Consequently, that end of the driveshaft touches the gear oil. If the driveshaft is out, then gear oil can come out. If the driveshaft was installed when the gear oil came out from the top of the gearbox, then it’s time to look into a new driveshaft seal. It would be a good idea to refill the gearbox now that that much has leaked out, and gear oil bottles commonly say not to mix gear oils (I think because of a concern with their additives mixing incompatibaly), so a complete oil change would be my reccomendation. If this motor has the standard 2 slotted screws on the gearcase, refill the gearbox by slowly pumping the new marine outboard gear oil into the lower screw hole to avoid creating air bubbles or air pockets. On the subject of oil, use TC-W3 oil and a minimum fuel mix ratio of 16/1 in the powerhead for good lubrication.
P.S. Nice find!!! That motor looks to be in wonderful condition!
January 18, 2026 at 12:23 am #303536I believe the oil you are seeing is just unburned fuel/oil mix oozing down from the powerhead, turning black as it mixes with carbon in the exhaust. Yes, the square end of the driveshaft goes up into the powerhead.
