HI,
This is Adam from Newfane, VT zigfamily23@yahoo.com
After completing point & cond, plug wires, I put the flywheel on and started. I rev’d it too hi hearing a rattle under the flywheel. Took it off and found play in the mag plate. I likely didn’t tighten the wheel down or rev’d it to high … Meantime are there any fixes to stabilize the plate to eliminate the lateral movement? Is there a berring or bushing to replace. I have read something about putting a dimple somewhere but not sure how to do that ….
As far as I know, that clearance is not adjustable. I had a similar situation with my 1954 Sea King 12 and simply replaced the mag plate with a new one.
Be sure that the coil laminations are perfectly flush to the machined surfaces they sit on.
The center piece of the powerhead where the mag plate rides on, could get excessively worn and creat that issue. If you remove the mag plate hold down hardware and place the mag plate back on there, you will see better how much slop is there. Replacing the mag plate will help, however the excessive wear will still be there on the other surface.
Frank, what engines will this kit work on? Any Big Twin 35s from the 50’s? Just curious, I have one of those NOS kits too.
Officially, 28hp ’62-’64, 33hp ’65-69, 40hp ’61-69. But I know I’ve used them on other motors too, by possibly drilling & tapping a screw hole or something.
