HI,
This is Adam from Newfane, VT

After completing point & cond, plug wires, I put the flywheel on and started. I rev’d it too hi hearing a rattle under the flywheel. Took it off and found play in the mag plate. I likely didn’t tighten the wheel down or rev’d it to high … Meantime are there any fixes to stabilize the plate to eliminate the lateral movement? Is there a berring or bushing to replace. I have read something about putting a dimple somewhere but not sure how to do that ….May 30, 2016 at 3:40 pm #37368As far as I know, that clearance is not adjustable. I had a similar situation with my 1954 Sea King 12 and simply replaced the mag plate with a new one.
Be sure that the coil laminations are perfectly flush to the machined surfaces they sit on.
Flywheel torque must be exactly right.
May 30, 2016 at 3:55 pm #37371The center piece of the powerhead where the mag plate rides on, could get excessively worn and creat that issue. If you remove the mag plate hold down hardware and place the mag plate back on there, you will see better how much slop is there. Replacing the mag plate will help, however the excessive wear will still be there on the other surface.
May 30, 2016 at 3:58 pm #37372There is a kit to fix that. It updates the mounting parts to those that came out in later years. I’d have to look it up to get the details.

But I know I’ve used them on other motors too, by possibly drilling & tapping a screw hole or something.
