I posted this on members forum as well.
Trying to mate a 1965 Merc 900 distributor back together and have concerns about the drive tang alignment when I install it back to the distributor drive unit. I think I have it right as it seems that it will only go together one way. Is there a method that will definitely indicate that if it goes together it must be installed correctly?
RickJanuary 22, 2019 at 10:41 pm #164340you are correct it goes only one way.
January 23, 2019 at 7:29 am #164360Thanks Dave, I was concerned about all the play with the junction between the shaft connection. I’ll just install it again and try not to overthink it!
RickJanuary 23, 2019 at 11:45 am #164370THE PLAY IS FOR THE OLD DIRECT REVERSING MOTORS.
January 23, 2019 at 11:57 am #164372Dave’s correct,
90 degrees slop between the dist & upper drive was devised to retard timing enough to run in the opposite direction.January 23, 2019 at 1:17 pm #164374On a similar note, does the timing mark on the merc 900 flywheel correspond to any cylinder TDC? I don’t have a very definite mark and when I removed the flywheel from the hub to change the belt, there are several ways to bolt it back on. How would I get to put it back in it’s original position on the crankshaft hub? I really cannot see any timing mark on the flywheel, which leaves me hung up right now.

I made the same mistake before, should of removed the complete flywheel & hub as a unit. Maybe Dave has a way to relocate the hub to the flywheel. Unless you painted the flywheel with fingernail polish, then the same threads there is no index point.January 24, 2019 at 12:13 pm #164479Jeff, so far I’ve heard that the TDC mark on the flywheel is for the #1 cyl. It would seem that I can just find this and mark my flywheel to get my reference back and align the dist gear arrow .Then I can set #3 cyl to .222 before it’s TDC for setting the distributor. I hope I’m not missing something, but I’m sure any problems with surface when I try this procedure.
Thanks for the response,
RickJanuary 24, 2019 at 5:43 pm #164505put the hub on with the belt. bring the top cyl . # 1 to TDC. then point the arrow on the drive gear pointing at the crank. now the engine is in basic timing. now set the flywheel on with the timing mark lined up to the arrow, install bolts. remove the fly wheel to stake the bolts. when they are tightened. call me if you need
1 914 310 7086. Dave.January 24, 2019 at 6:51 pm #164510Dave, that’s exactly what I did. I’m going to continue with the distributor setup tomorrow. Some specs have changed because I found out today that this is not a 1965 Merc 900 but a 1966 Merc 950!This gives me a .235 btdc for # 3 and I now have to do the points setup again, since the brown wire is point set #1 instead of the white wire that I had been incorrectly using for setup.
Thanks for the reply, you can be sure that I’ll get back to you if I have continuing problems. It seems so straight forward!
