January 24, 2019 at 7:34 pm #164512Rick,
Be careful on advance remember back in 66 we had real gas, I would back off a tinch on advance to compensate for the sugar fuel we get now, Yes, Dave can smell a Merc problem across the country!
Great friend with so much advice!!-

January 24, 2019 at 8:06 pm #164514I’m guessing that it’s not an SS model, but the timing specs call for .235 btdc on#3 on 1966 models. Would that be the same for both style ignitions in 1966? I know the write up calls for the other set of points to be #1 set compared to 1965, does that seem correct?
January 25, 2019 at 4:04 am #164532Good advice, Jeff! I’ll keep that in mind when I finally get this resolved, THe only thing that’s bugging me now is the fact that when I hold the rotor and turn the dist case counterclockwise, the points are opening too soon. The limit screw was set when I used this engine for years without it changing, but now it has about 1/4″ to get to the stop. Something is not correct now. I’ve even gone thru the point adjustment again using the 1965 specs but it’s correct. Going to pursue the the 1966 specs and see if it comes out correctly. The confusing part is that I had always assumed, in the past, it was a 1965 900 and set it up accordingly. Never had any problems for years. Must be my advancing age giving me “The Stupids” !
Think I’ll have to take a break today since the long days of standing by the motor has stiffened up my back.
RickJanuary 25, 2019 at 3:28 pm #164590you have to take the side coil wire off and use your finger to take the play out of the rotor. cant remember which way.
January 25, 2019 at 6:43 pm #164650Dave, I have the the dist cap off and am putting the dist to the idle stop. I then put the rotor as much counter clockwise until it stops. Then I turn the dist housing slowly counter clockwise; holding the rotor in place, until point set 1 opens. This should be where I set the stop screw. The only problem I’m having is that that only travel I have is about 1/4″ from the idle stop position on the drive housing before the points open. When I used this engine years ago I could turn the dist quite a bit to the limit stop. Now it moves only the 1/4″ for idle before the points open. I didn’t measure it, but there must be at least 1/2″ to go to hit the max stop. The max stop is set where I had it in years past and ran perfectly. I know I’m missing something, just don’t know what at this point. I’m waiting until my die shows up Monday to clean up the threads on my .235 timing gauge and see how that goes. Right now I’m using a dial indicator. Haven’t worked on this motor for about 20 years and never had problems setting these at that time and it ran fine. Pretty sure I’m missing something.
RickJanuary 25, 2019 at 8:25 pm #164667could it be that the grease is dried and hard and the dis is not making full movement. I have had it happen many times in 4cyl mag drives.
January 25, 2019 at 8:38 pm #164669I’ll take a look at that tomorrow, thanks Dave.
January 25, 2019 at 8:45 pm #164670By the way, what part would be frozen, the dist works or the mechanism it’s bolted to. The adapter seems to have free motion and I drove old grease out of it. What area are you talking about? I’m moving the distributor by hand, so I know it’s free.
January 25, 2019 at 11:26 pm #164689the drive advance that the dis bolts to.
