Working on replacing the water pump impeller on a 1973 evinrude 25 HP. Took all the bolts out of the gear case and separated it. There is no connector on the shifting rod. Do I remove the power head? Or take the gear box apart? Can’t find any other way to get to the water pump.

According to the parts diagram, the shift rod coupler is part #8 as shown below. Remove the bottom screw COMPLETELY before dropping the lower unit and it should come down.

Your motor will have a little access panel on the starboard side of the exhaust housing about a third of the way up. Undo the two screws holding the cover on and the shift rod connector inside will be exposed.

Like Ben said, you have to take the bolt all the way out. Not just loosen it.
