I have a 3 1/2 hp firestone that has not been started since maybe the early 60s. I thought that the powerhead was seized up. So I pulled the head off and the piston will move a quarter of an inch freely. And I can hear a clunk in the lower unit when I do that. So I am thinking there is a frozen bearing maybe in the lower drive train maybe any thoughts before I separate the motor from the drive unit. Also when I move the throttle lever it is tight to move. And I don’t want to just spray wd40 or any lube blindly.

So you are convinced the clunk is from the lower unit??? If it is, remove the cap from the front of the lower unit to see what’s going on in there. But you also say that the throttle lever is tight to move. That makes me wonder if the lockup problem is something came loose under the flywheel. It is very likely that it will need ignition service anyway, so pulling the flywheel for a looksee isn’t going to be wasted effort.

Removing the powerhead isn’t going to resolve anything.

Hmmmmmm ok tomorrow I will seperate the lower unit where the water pump and see what that looks like. I have to do a little research to see how the fly wheel comes off

Will I need a puller to get the flywheel off and is the nut a standard right hand thread?

OK the issue is the lower unit. I pulled the front cover off where you fill with lube, the prop shaft is frozen to the front cover (when the cover came off there was nothing but dust). The motor was still seized, so I pulled the mid section out and the motor turns freely. However the main shaft is seized to the midsection. So both gears need to be replaced. the shafts appear to be in good shape, but I am having a hard time trying to get the gears off the prop shaft and main shaft. Are these gears available and how do they come off the shafts.

They made about a trainload of those motors, so there are used parts out there. Figure out what you need and post a want ad on this website. The ad is free.

Does anyone know how to seperate the gear from the bottom of the main drive shaft
